Introduction to the School of Information Engineering, Nanchang University

The School of Information Engineering at Nanchang University traces its origins to the Radio Physics Program of Jiangxi University and the Department of Electrical Machinery of Jiangxi Institute of Technology, both established in 1958. It has developed into a teaching and research institution that integrates talent cultivation, scientific research, and social service. The School has made remarkable achievements in discipline development, faculty team building, talent cultivation, scientific and technological innovation, and social service.

Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the School carries out the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education. It has developed a Party-building work system themed "Infinite Prospects, Intelligent and Beautiful Information Engineering" and strengthened the brands "Camphor · Red Core" (teacher success) and "Camphor · Red Tower" (student achievement). By implementing the initiative of "establishing Party branches within disciplinary teams," improving the "Party building plus" working mechanism, and strengthening Party-member discipline and cultivation, several branches and Party members have received honors at the university level and above. High-quality Party building has led the high-quality development of the School. Integrated progress in education, science and technology, and talent development has produced fruitful results, while the integration of science and education as well as industry and education has been notably effective.

The School boasts a comprehensive set of strong disciplines and robust platform support. It currently comprises five teaching departments: the Department of Electronic Information Engineering, the Department of Information and Communication Engineering, the Department of Energy and Electrical Engineering, the Department of Automation, and the Department of Integrated Circuits (preparatory). It has two teaching centers: the National Demonstration Center for Electrical and Electronic Experiment Teaching and the Specialized Experiment Center. It has established six provincial/ministerial research platforms, including the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Signal Processing and Intelligent Communications, the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Systems and Human–Computer Interaction, the Jiangxi Embedded Systems Engineering Technology Research Center, the Jiangxi Intelligent Medical Information Detection and IoT Engineering Research Center, the Engineering Center of Intelligent Sensing Technology for Spatial Information under the Ministry of Education, and the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Sensing and Advanced Control for New Power Systems of the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Education.

The School has a complete undergraduate, master's, and doctoral education system. It offers a first-level doctoral program in Information and Communication Engineering, first-level master's programs in Control Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering, six professional master's programs in Electronic Information, and one professional master's program in Energy and Power. It offers five undergraduate majors: Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Its Automation, Automation, Electronic Information Engineering, and Integrated Circuit Design and Integrated Systems. Four of these majors—Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Its Automation, Automation, and Electronic Information Engineering—have been approved as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and the first three have successfully passed engineering education accreditation by the Ministry of Education.

The School has an outstanding faculty. It currently has 177 faculty and staff members, including more than 140 full-time teachers, over 100 faculty with senior professional titles, and nearly 100 PhD holders. It is home to a large number of high-level leading talents, including national-level and provincial/ministerial-level talent awardees. Over the past five years, the School has achieved fruitful research results. It has undertaken 177 national and provincial projects, including 62 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as 287 industry-commissioned projects. Total research funding has exceeded RMB 100 million. The School has won eight Jiangxi Provincial Natural Science Awards/Science and Technology Progress Awards, published more than 1,000 papers in leading academic journals and conferences at home and abroad, obtained more than 272 authorized invention patents, and successfully transferred 56 patents. The School continues to reform its talent cultivation model and has trained and delivered a large number of outstanding new-engineering talents for society. It offers three national first-class undergraduate courses, has published nearly 10 high-quality textbooks, and jointly runs the "AMEC Experimental Class," dual bachelor's degree programs, and international student programs. The Industrial College of Intelligent IoT and Microfabrication has been approved as one of the first modern industrial colleges in Jiangxi Province. The School currently enrolls more than 2,400 undergraduates and over 1,200 master's and doctoral students. In the past three years, its students have won more than 300 national awards and more than 500 provincial awards in discipline competitions such as the China International College Students' Innovation Competition, the "Challenge Cup," and the National Graduate Electronic Design Contest. The rates of graduates pursuing further study and securing employment have remained high and stable, and overall employment quality is excellent.

With a focus on national strategies, social progress, and economic development needs, the School has set the goal of building itself into a first-class school that leads the development of the regional electronic information industry, serves national strategic needs, and features distinctive disciplines and interdisciplinary integration. It is developing a "one peak and three plateaus" disciplinary ecosystem in which Information and Communication Engineering serves as the leading peak, supported by the plateaus of Control Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering. The School is also focused on building two interdisciplinary growth poles: "optoelectronic information plus new materials" and "artificial intelligence plus medicine." Upholding the educational philosophy of "people-oriented, morality first, and learning foremost," it cultivates a teaching ethos of "bright virtue, professional excellence, intellectual enlightenment, and skillful guidance," a learning style of "diligent study, thoughtful inquiry, steadfast practice, and intelligent innovation," and a cultural identity of "communication reaching the world, intelligent innovation shaping the future." The School strives to be a pioneer in the new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation, to paint a magnificent picture of "Infinite Prospects, Intelligent and Beautiful Information Engineering," and to make greater contributions to building a strong country and advancing the great cause of national rejuvenation.
